Role and application of niobium carbide

Niobium carbide is a green cubic crystal with metallic luster, belonging to the sodium chloride cubic crystal system. It has high melting point, high hardness (microhardness 235GPa, harder than corundum), good chemical stability (stable at 1 000~1 100℃, and rapid oxidation into niobium pentoxide above 1 100℃), insoluble hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid, A mixture of hot hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid soluble only. Niobium carbide is easy to melt in titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, tungsten carbide and other compounds to form homogeneous solid solutions, so it can be used to manufacture cermet, heat resistant alloys and hard alloys. With the addition of niobium carbide, the grains are refined and the comprehensive properties are significantly improved, and the cutting tools made with niobium carbide also have good thermal hardness, thermal shock resistance and thermal oxidation resistance.

1. Good chemical stability, high temperature performance, is a kind of high melting point, high hardness material, widely used in refractory high temperature materials and cemented carbide additives;

2. Niobium carbide is a three-component and four-component carbide solid solution component. It is used in hot forging die, cutting tool, jet engine turbine blade, valve, tail dress and rocket nozzle coating together with tungsten carbide and molybdenum carbide.

3. As a carbide carbide additive, it is a ternary and quaternary carbide solid solution component, such as WC-NbC-C ternary system, etc. It can also be used as purple artificial gemstone.

4. Used for producing wear-resistant film and semiconductor film. It can also be used as raw material for the production of molybdenum carbide, and can be used for the manufacture of special alloy without chromium and engineering ceramics.
