Ammonium cerium nitrate CAN is a strong oxidizing agent, which is more oxidizing under acidic conditions, second only to ₂, XeO₃, Ag(II), O₃, and HN₃. In aqueous solutions and other protic solvents, CAN is a single-electron oxidizing agent, and CAN consumption can be judged by the change in color (from orange to light yellow). Due to the limited solubility in organic solvents, the reactions in which CAN is involved are mostly carried out in mixed solvents such as water/acetonitrile. In the presence of other oxidants such as sodium bromate, tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, Ce(IV) can be recycled to achieve a catalytic reaction. In addition, CAN is an effective nitrification reagent. CAN has oxidation activity to alcohols, phenols, ethers and other oxygen-containing compounds, among which it has specific oxidation to secondary alcohols. If benzyl alcohol is oxidized to the corresponding aldehyde-ketone, even p-nitrobenzyl alcohol CAN be oxidized to p-nitrobenzyl ketone by the CAN/O₂ catalytic oxidation system. In addition, for special secondary alcohols, such as 4-enols or 5-enols, cyclic ether compounds can also be obtained.
Ammonium cerium nitrate is an orange-red complex with high water solubility and strong oxidation. Mainly used as organic synthesis catalyst, oxidant, polymerization initiator, integrated circuit etchant. As an oxidant and initiator, ammonium cerium nitrate has the advantages of high reactivity, good selectivity, less dosage and less pollution.
Storage precautions: Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources, prevent direct sunlight. Packaging and sealing should be stored separately from reducing agents, active metal powders and edible chemicals. Should not be mixed storage, equipped with the corresponding type and amount of fire equipment, storage areas should be equipped with suitable materials to contain leaks.
