Specific gravity 0.82; Melting point 680°C, slightly soluble in ether, insoluble in benzene, toluene and other non-polar organic solvents. Stable in dry air or oxygen at room temperature; Powdered lithium hydride may spontaneous combustion in very humid air, but lumped lithium hydride will not burn even if put in excessive water, but the reaction is very violent; Lithium hydride can react gently with alcohols to form lithium alcohols and hydrogen gas.

Uses: in organic synthesis, used as shrinkage agent, reducing agent, alkylation reagent, Clarkson’s reagent, also can be used as desiccant.
