Rhenium dioxide is different from rhenium heptoxide in that it is insoluble in water, insoluble in dilute acids, and soluble in concentrated halogen acids. It is easy to react with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide to produce perrhenic acid. At high temperature, it will decompose into rhenium metal and rhenium heptoxide. Similar to osmium dioxide and iridium dioxide, its cell structure is rutile type accumulation.
